Green was the tenth child of eleven born in his family, and lived in Mississippi until 1958 when he moved to Chicago. While working and attending Englewood High, he sang on weekends, and one day while singing in a pool room, he was overheard by Argia B. Collins, a local owner of a bar-b-que chain. Collins agreed to bankroll Green's attendance at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, where Green studied voice and piano, and played in local bars and clubs.
In 1967, Green won a local talent show at a club called the Trocadero. His prize was a concert opening for Lou Rawls and Earl Hines at the Sutherland Lounge. In the audience was Mel Collins, and his wife Joshie Jo Armstead, who was a songwriter who had written tunes with Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson prior to the couple joining Motown. The couple arranged for Green to do a recording session in Detroit and released the result as a single on their label, Gamma Records, a song called "Girl I Love You." It sold well locally and was picked up by MCA subsidiary, Revue Records for national distribution. Revue released three further singles from Green who then moved to MCA's main label, Uni Records.

Vel remained in Mississippi with his grandparents. He attended church on Sundays and recalls traveling to neighboring towns participating in or sometimes observing the "Gospel Fests."

After graduating from high school, Caliste began singing at her cousin's bar 'Laura's Playhouse' and caught the attention of many different bands who were willing to accompany her. In 1965, she recorded a demo of a cover version of Jackie Wilson's song "Stop Doggin' Me Around." Her demo attracted record producer Huey Meaux, who signed her to a recording contract at the Jet Star/Tribe record labels. Shortly thereafter, Caliste adopted the professional name of "Jean Knight," because she felt that her surname was too hard to pronounce.
Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs were an American doo-wop/R&B vocal group, active during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Originally The Royal Charms, the band changed its name to The Gladiolas in 1957 and The Excellos in 1958, before finally settling on "The Zodiacs" in 1959.
Maurice Williams (born 26 April 1938, Lancaster, South Carolina) had his first experience with music in the church, where his mother and sister both performed. By the time he was six, Williams was performing regularly there. With his childhood friend Earl Gainey, Williams formed the gospel group 'The Junior Harmonizers', but as rock and roll and doo-wop became their primary interest, the Junior Harmonizers changed their name to 'The Royal Charms'.
The Royal Charms and The Gladiolas In addition to Williams and Gainey, The Royal Charms were made up of Willie Jones (baritone), William Massey (tenor, baritone, trumpet), and Norman Wade (bass). In the winter of 1956, while still in high school, Williams and his band traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to record for the Excello record label. At the time they were going by the name 'The Royal Charms,' but the founder of Excello Records, Ernie Young, convinced them to change their name to 'The Gladiolas.' At the time, there were at least two other bands using the same name.

Tia Carroll Has toured on the international blues circuit and has been well received with rave reviews.
On her first CD "Wanna Ride" Tia was taking on a real rock flavor courtesy of her good friend & guitarist George von Giese. Tia recalls: "George added some crazy ! sick guitar licks that really gave me some inspiration". Tia's second and self-titled CD, "Tia Carroll", is a bit more Soul and R&B, and the musicians on that project were strictly hired guns with plenty of musical ammunition blasting throughout the entire album. Both CDs are highly recommended, especially on the second CD it has to be said that Tia's voice is awesome and the musicians on the album knew how to support her - blues, R&B, rock at its best!!!

That sweetly roughened twang of Candi Staton’s has captivated a new generation of music lovers just as it did when she first oooed and ahhed onto the music scene as a soul siren in the `70s. A sample of that voice distinguishes the American Triple A #1 radio smash “Kandi” by British rock band, One EskimO. The tune adroitly fetches the hook of Staton’s 1971 hit “He Called Me Baby” to nail the delicious groove. “Kandi is beautiful” wrote a Los Angeles Times magazine scribe, “…catchy, ambient pop” wrote a Billboard magazine muse, and The Lefsetz Letter declared it: “A track so in the pocket that your body turned into Gumby, you were bending in places where angles were never created, you were infected with sound.”
